Portfolio Piece: App Icons Redesign
home / design & dev / App Icons Redesign
Description
These application icons are designed as a part of the Vector Graphics Course requirements at Capilano University’s Interactive Design Program. The task was to redesign the icons to create a clean, unified look on the dock. The icons should be easily identifiable even when scaled down to 32 x 32 pixels.
My first set of animal icons is inspired by the mascots of some of my favourite apps: Firefox, MAMP and Adium. I chose to use the first letters of the app as the centerpiece for the icon and incorporated the color scheme of the original app icon to make each one easy to recognize.
My second set of icons is for the Microsoft Office for Mac package. Since the animal icons uses 3-D lettering, I decided to use the same technique to create tiles for these icons. Again, I kept the main color scheme for each product and inset the shape of the original icons. The white background on the tiles ties the set together.
My final set is for the major Adobe Products. Since the original icons are already highly simplified and easy to identify. I simply added the 3-D tile effect to match my other two sets.
